Daguoye Columnar Basalt
Daguoye Columnar Basalt is known for its rows of five- and six-sided rock columns, formed as volcanic lava cooled and contracted around 10 million years ago. Located on Xiyu Island, the site was accidentally uncovered during excavation for a wharf in the Japanese colonial period. Today, it’s a popular stop along Penghu’s northern sightseeing route.
One of the site’s unique features appears after heavy rain, when water collects in front of the basalt cliffs, creating reflections of the rock columns. Even without the reflections, visitors can get a close look at the formations and their natural textures. The site is open 24 hours a day and can easily be included in a trip around Xiyu Island.
Staying at OLÉ? Daguoye Columnar Basalt is on the same island, about a 10-minute drive away.
